Unusual!! 普通じゃない！！

We were supposed to take a boat on Ganges River early this morning, but unfortunately it was very misty. We decided to take the boat in the afternoon instead.
Before went to the boat, Chris was starting to feel a bit sick. Diarrhea, nausea… He eventually decided it was safer to stay home in bed. I went by myself to take the boat with Kate and Martin.
After the boat, I went back to the hotel quickly because I was worried about Chris. Chris always eats a lot and has a lot of pep, but today was terrible. When I came back to the hotel to see Chris, he was worse! I hope he will get better soon…

今日の朝早く、ガンジス川で船に乗る予定だったが、深い霧の為午後に変更。
だってなーんにも見えないんだもん・・・

午後の約束の時間・・・
クリスの体調が悪くなってきた。
ひどい下痢と嘔気。
結局クリスは行くのをやめて、私とKateとMartinの三人で行くことにした。
ボートが終わったら、急いでホテルに帰った。
クリスの症状はだんだん悪くなってきている。
いつもは大食いで元気一杯のクリスがくたばっていると、本当に心配になる。
早く良くなればいいけれど・・・
一月二日夜中の夜行列車に乗ってブッダ・ガヤに行く予定で、チケットの予約もしているし・・・

Another coincidental reunion またまた偶然の再会！

We went to lunch with the Japanese motorbike girl and her friend. After lunch, we went to her hotel’s café – and Kate & Martin were sitting there! Oh my gosh!! Coincident again!! I was so happy to see them again that I almost cried. After that, we talked about each other’s traveling.

今日は、昨日偶然再会した日本人バイクライダーと彼女の友達と４人でランチに行った。

その後、彼女のホテルのカフェに行った。

そしたらなんと！！！

そこにデリで別れたKateとMartinが座ってるじゃぁ～ないのぉ～～！！

あまりの偶然に、びっくりしたのと再会できてうれしいのとで泣きそうになった。

その後、デリで別れてこれまでのお互いの旅の話しをした。

Coincidental reunion 偶然の再会

We went to Sarnath where Buddha gave his first sermon. Sarnath is just 10 km northwest of Varanasi. It was a very small town, but it was very interesting to see.

What a coincidence today. We met the Japanese motorbike girl tonight in Varanasi. Close to the Ghats, the streets are very narrow. She was riding her big mortorbike on the narrow streets, shouting, “どいてー！どいてー！(get out of the way!)” in Japanese. Sometimes there are cows or dogs (and theirs poo) on the street. It’s even difficult to walk! After we met her, we guided her to her hotel. If she hadn’t met us, it would have been very difficult for her to find her hotel. She was lucky and very happy that she ran into us. Us too! :-)

今日はブッダが初めて説法をしたと言われているサールナートへ行った。
仏教徒の聖地、初転法輪の地である。 バラナシから北東に１０ｋｍの場所にある。
小さな町だけど、見所がたくさんある町だった。
今日はなんて偶然な日だろう！！
なんとアグラで会ったバイクでケープタウンから旅行している日本人女性と再会したのだ。
彼女もバラナシに行くことは知っていったが、本当に偶然だった。
私達の泊まっているガート付近は道が狭いうえに、もちろんのように野良犬や野良牛がいて、そしてそれらのウンチが落ちている。
その中を、「どいてー！どいてー！」と日本語で叫びながらバイクに乗った女性が近付いて来るじゃないの～～！！
歩くのだって容易じゃないこの狭い道を、よくバイクで入ってきたなぁ～。
私達は彼女のホテルまでガイドしてあげた。
彼女は私達に会わないと、ホテルを見付けるのは絶対に難しかったはず。
彼女は私達に会えてラッキーだったし、私達も会えてうれしかった。

Worst town, Varanasi 最悪な町、バラナシ

We arrived in Varanasi before noon. Varanasi was the most terrible town in India because so many people tried to cheat us, many salesman asked unpleasantly in Japanese. I just asked some guy about hotels. Finally, he asked me for money. Hotel touts followed us to get a commission... We asked the hotel touts many times, "Please don't follow us, " but nothing helped. Also we asked policemen to help, but they wouldn't help. We alomost got into a fight with some hotel touts. Eventually, they followed us until out hotel. Our hotel owner explained to us, "this hotel doesn't pay any commissions." We could stay at a good, cheap hotel.

昼前にバラナシに到着。
バラナシは旅行して来たインドの中で最も最悪な町だ。
ホテルのたくさんあるガンガー付近に到着するやいなや、ホテルの勧誘が始まる。
これはどこの町に行っても同じだが、バラナシはレベルが違った。
ただ道を尋ねただけなのに、ガイド料だと言ってお金をせびってくる。(もちろん払わなかったけど・・・)
嫌みったらしく日本語で、「こんにちは～、どこに行くの～？」って多くのインド人が言って来る。
ホテルの勧誘が、コミッション目当てにしつこくずーーーーーっと私達に付いて来る。
何度も何度も付いて来ないでと言ってるのに、それでも付いて来る。
途中で警察に助けを求めたが、役に立たず・・・

本当に喧嘩になりそうにもなった。
結局一人のホテルの勧誘は、私達のホテルまで付いて来た。
でも私達のホテルはノーコミッション制！！ふ～ん、ざまぁ～みろ！！
私達は安いホテルを見付けることが出来た。

High security at Taj Mahal? 厳しいセキュリティーのタージ・マハル？

We went to the Taj Mahal. It was amazingly beautiful!! Before we entered the Taj Mahal, we were searched. Nothing unusual. Thy found my electronic dictionary. They told me, “Oh madam, you can’t bring in your calculator.” I said “It’s not a calculator. This is an electronic dictionary. (Actually, It has calculator.)” They said “No.” I said, “Why not?” They said, “No.” “???...My English is not good. I need a dictionary.” “No, you can’t bring in an electronic diary.” “HUH? This is not a electronic diary. This is a dictionary.” “No” Reluctantly, I went to leave my electronic dictionary in the cloakroom. I asked again there, too, but he said, “You can’t bring in a electronic diary.” “This is not a diary. This is a dictionary. My English is not good. I want read the information signs. I need this dictionary.” He couldn’t understand, and then I left my diary. Oops, no no… dictionary! After seeing the Taj Mahal, I went to pick up my electronic dictionary. When the cloakroom man passed me the dictionary, he dropped it very hard. AHHHHH!! OH MY!! He said, “Oh sorry, sorry.” I was really worried about it, but it still worked. It was annoying, annoying…

Did you know the Taj Mahal isn’t a palace? It’s the tomb of Emperor Shah Jahan’s second wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their fourteenth child in 1631. The death of Mumtaz left the emperor so heart broken that his hair is said to have turned gray overnight. The emperor was crazy about construction, so he tried to represent his love for her by building the Taj Mahal. In total 20,000 people from India and Central Asia worked on the building. Specialists were brought in from as far afield as Europe to produce the exquisite marble screens and pietra dura (marble inlay work) made with thousands of semiprecious stones. The construction bill is believed to have run to Rs 3 million, equivalent to about CA$78 million today. The country was weakened by building the Tal. It took 22 years to build. It’s rumored that the emperor didn’t want anybody to build anything better than the Taj Mahal, so he cut off the hands of the people who worked on the Taj.

In the afternoon, we went to Agra Fort. Emperor Shah Jahan was imprisoned there for 8 years in the Musamman Burj, where he could look out at the tomb of his second wife the Taj Mahal. If I was the emperor Shah Jahan’s first wife, I would have been jealous. :-P I’m wondering, didn’t he love his first wife as much? Why did he love his second wife so much!?

今日はあの有名なタージ・マハルに行った。
それはそれはすばらしかった。タージ・マハルに入る前に、いつものようにボディーチェック。
そこで私の電子辞書が引っかかった。
セキュリティーのおじさん：「おーマダム、計算機は中に持ち込めません。」
私：「これ計算機じゃなくて、電子辞書です。(本当のところ、計算機機能も付いてる電子辞書なんだけど・・・)」
セキュリティーのおじさん：「だめです。」
私：「なんでだめなんですか？」
セキュリティーのおじさん：「だめです。」
私：「？？・・・私は英語が苦手でこれが必要なんです。」
セキュリティーのおじさん：「だめです。あなたの電子日記は持ち込めません。」
私：「はぁ～～～？？これはdiary日記じゃなくてdictionary辞書ですぅ～！(怒)」
セキュリティーのおじさん：「だめです。」
渋々、荷物預かり所に行った。そこでももう一度尋ねてみた。
そしたらそこの人も、「電子日記は持ち込めません。」
私：「これは電子日記じゃなくて辞書ですぅ～！！私は英語が苦手でタージ・マハルの中の説明文を読むのに必要なんです！！」
それでも彼は理解してくれず、結局私は日記を・・・おっと違う違う、辞書を預けた。
タージ・マハルを見終わって、預けた電子辞書を受け取りに行った。
そしたら、係りのおじさんがなんとすごい勢いで私の電子辞書を落としたのだ！！
「あああああぁぁぁぁぁ～～～！！！」
「おっと、ゴメンゴメン。」
っておいおい、ゴメンじゃないよ！すごく心配したけど電子辞書は無事だった。

そうそう、知ってた？
タージ・マハルは宮殿ではなく、実はお墓だということ・・・
ムガル帝国第五皇帝シャー・ジャハーンの第二夫人ムムターズ・マハルのお墓なのだ。
妃ムムターズ・マハルは１６歳で結婚し、３８歳で亡くなるまでの２２年間に、なんと１４人もの子供を生んだ。
彼女が無くなった時、皇帝はすごく悲しんだ為、一晩で髪は白髪になったと言われている。
死を悲しんだシャー・ジャハーン皇帝は建築狂だったらしく、ムガル帝国の国力を傾けて(実際、国は傾いた)このタージ・マハルを建設し、その愛を表現しようとした。
インドをはじめ、中央アジアなどから二万人もの職人が集められた。
また、ヨーロッパなど世界各地から膨大な量の大理石や貴石が取り寄せられ、２２年と言われる歳月をかけて完成された。
現在のお金に換算すると、７８億円の総工費用だと言われている。
そう言えば、誰かが教えてくれた話では・・・タージ・マハルを建てた皇帝は、タージ・マハル以上にすばらしい建築物を建てさせないようにするために、タージ・マハルが出来上がった後、職人の手をすべて切り落としたとか・・・

午後は、アグラ城へ行った。
このお城の一部に、ムサマン・ムルジュという塔がある。
ここはなんとタージ・マハルを建てたシャー・ジャハーン皇帝が、自分の三男に八年間も幽閉され、死を迎えたという場所である。

もし私が皇帝の第一夫人なら、きっと嫉妬してると思う(笑)。皇帝はどうしてここまで第二夫人を愛していたんだろう。第一夫人の事は、そこまで愛していなかったのかな～～～？

We traveled to Agra from Delhi by train. It took 4 hours, but the train was 2 hours late, same as usual. We met a Japanese girl at out hotel who had traveled from Cape Town, South Africa by motorbike. She was very nice. We went to dinner with her this evening.

今日はデリから、タージマハルで有名な町アグラヘ移動。
列車で４時間の旅。
しかしながら、いつものとおり列車は２時間の遅れ。

アグラのホテルで、ある日本人女性に出会った。
なんと彼女は、南アフリカのケープタウンからモーターバイクで旅をしている。
その日の夜は彼女と一緒に食事に行き、いろんな話を聞いた。
すごい体験をしてきている女性で、もっともっと色んな話をしたい人だった。

We went to the National Museum today. I get bored quickly at museums, but Chris likes museums very much. I browse the museum displays quickly, but Chris takes a loooong time to look. (Museum display explanations are all English. That’s a problem for me, since my English isn’t good enough to understand the explanations. Complain complain… :-P) While Chris was looking at the museum stuff, I sat on a bench and read Lonely Planet… and dozed off…

今日は国立博物館に行った。
実際の所、私は博物館があまり好きではないというか、苦手というか・・・
でもクリスは私と全く逆で、どこの博物館に行っても、すごく興味深く見ている。
・・・という訳で、私はやはりデリの博物館も短時間で見終えてしまった。
クリスはというと、解説文を全部読んでいるようで、ゆっくりゆっくり回っている。(実際のところ、説明文は全部英語だから、私のこの英語力では１００％理解できる訳がなく・・・。だから早く見終えてしまうんだよ。日本語の解説文だったら、私も全部読んで理解できるのに！ハイ、言い訳でした。)
クリスがまだ見回っている間、私は椅子に座ってガイドブックを読み・・・ウトウト。

I will miss you... :'-( 寂しくなるよ・・・

It was very sad day today because we had to say good-bye to Kate and Martin. They are going to the north west of India. We are going to the east side of India. I was sooooo sad. I cried. :’-( I couldn’t even say “thank you” to them…or anything. I have been very happy traveling with you guys!! I’ll email you, Kate and Martin!! We can see each other some day for sure. In Japan or Canada or South Africa or UK?


今日はすごく悲しい日だった。
・・・と言うのも、KateとMartinにサヨナラを言わないといけないからだ。
彼らはこれからインドの北東に行く予定で、私達は東インドに行く予定。
別れる時、すごく悲し過ぎて泣いてしまい、結局何も言えなかった。ありがとうさえも・・・
KateとMartinとの旅行はすごく楽しかった。
二人に会えてすごくよかった。
メールするからねー！
私達絶対にどこか出会えるよね！？うん、絶対に！！
日本かカナダか南アフリカかそれともイギリス？

There are a lot of to place to see in Delhi. Then we took bus tour. We visited Jantar Mantar, Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Qutub Minar, Bhai’s House of Workship (Lotus Temple), Red Fort, Rai Ghat and Humayun’s Tomb. Actually, I don’t remember which one is which… :-P

デリは見所がたくさんありすぎる。
なので私達はバスツアーに申し込んだ。
私達は、ジャンタル・マンタル、ラクシュミー・ナーラーヤン寺院、バハイ共同体(ロータス寺)、クトゥブ・ミーナール、レッド・フォート、ラージ・ガート、フマユーン廟に行った。
たくさんの場所に行き過ぎて、今考えるとどれがどこだかよく分からない・・・
